Dunoon & The Isle of Bute
Dunoon is the main resort on the beautiful Cowal Peninsula and the maritime gateway to the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park. This one of the Firth of Clydes foremost resorts is built around the historic Castle Mound and famous for its large Victorian pier. The town has an attractive promenade, and boasts a wide range of attractions, take a walk along the high street and browse the selection of craft shops and galleries, or enjoy a refreshment in one of the cafes or restaurants.
Just a short ferry ride across Loch Ruel takes us to the beautiful island of Bute with its lush scenery and tranquil setting. The highlight of our visit to Bute is Mount Stuart House, an architectural masterpiece that dates back to the 16th century.
Your Itinerary
Monday 9th: This morning we travel to Gouroch from where we take the ferry to Dunoon, arriving at our hotel in time to freshen up before dinner.
Tuesday 10th: After breakfast we drive to Colintraive where we take the short ferry crossing to the Isle of Bute where we visit the neo-gothic Mount Stuart House and Gardens, one of the most technologically advanced houses of its age, set in 300 acres of landscaped gardens, woodland and coast. In the afternoon we enjoy free time in Rothesay before returning to Dunoon.
Wednesday 11th: This morning we journey to the mainland from Hunters Quay to Gouroch by ferry from where we travel to Glasgow. We have time at leisure to explore the citys numerous cultural attractions including the Riverside Museum (an award winning transport museum) and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. In the afternoon we return to Gouroch for our return crossing to Dunoon.
Thursday 12th: This morning we drive north as we travel along the shores of the tranquil Loch Fyne to Inverary Castle & Gardens, where we enjoy a guided tour. After free time for lunch in the tea room we journey through spectacular Scottish scenery via the Rest and Be Thankful viewpoint (the highest point on the journey) to beautiful Loch Lomond, with a refreshment stop at the picture postcard village of Luss before returning to Dunoon.
Friday 13th: After breakfast we make our way home.
Esplanade Hotel, Dunoon
On the West Bay Promenade in Dunoon, Argyll, The Esplanade Hotel looks out over the sea. The hotel has a sun terrace, en suite rooms and entertainment most evenings. Rooms at Esplanade have bathrooms with baths and showers. They also include TVs, radios and tea/coffee making facilities. The restaurant offers a varied menu including a selection of traditional Scottish dishes. Cooked breakfasts are available daily, as well as continental options. There is an international wine list and over 100 malt whiskies to choose from in the bar. Above the garden there is the sun terrace with its stunning views of the River Clyde.
