Sail, Rail & Soaring the Tyrol
We explore the Tyrol in style on this superb tour featuring a journey on Europe’s oldest cog railway, a relaxing Lake Achen cruise and a cable car ride to the top of Germany’s highest mountain. The hotel also offers unlimited selected drinks daily 10.00 – 21.00 and on 4 afternoons a buffet of scrumptious cakes.

Your Itinerary

Tuesday 14th: We begin our holiday this morning, making our way to Dover and the short channel crossing to France, where we continue on our way to our hotel and overnight stop.
Wednesday 15th: Departing after breakfast we travel through Germany and into Austria, arriving at our hotel later this afternoon.
Thursday 16th: Today we visit the Tyrolean capital city of Innsbruck, surrounded by the jagged rock spires of the Nordkette mountain range. The day is free to explore this charming city, explore on foot or take a ride on the hop-on-hop-off bus or maybe enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride through the streets and historic Old Town.
Friday 17th: We spend today at leisure in Igls. After exploring the village, perhaps take a scenic cable car ride up the mountain or take the bus for a 10-minute trip back to Innsbruck for further exploration.
Saturday 18th: This morning we embark on the Achenseebahn, Europe’s oldest cog railway which is still steam operated. Puffing through the steeper sections, it rises to a 16% gradient from Jenbach to Seespitz. Here we join our coach for the short journey to the town of Pertisau where we enjoy some time at leisure before relaxing on a one-way cruise on beautiful Lake Achen to Scholastika on the northern shore.
Sunday 19th: Today we enjoy an amazing journey to the top of Germany’s highest mountain, Zugspitze, which sits at 2,962 metres above sea level. We start our ascent from the Austrian side via the stunning cable car ride from Ehrwald, soaking in some of the most dramatic views along the way. We have time at the summit before crossing into Germany, with time to admire the views of 400 mountain peaks spanning four countries visible on clear days. We then descend the German side of the mountain by cable car before a cogwheel train transports us the Bavarian town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Monday 20th: Sadly, it’s time to bid farewell to our hosts and make our way to our overnight hotel.
Tuesday 21st: We board the coach after breakfast and continue our journey to France and another short channel crossing before travelling homewards.
