Monday 06th: We depart from home this morning and make our way towards Carlisle. After taking a break for lunch, we arrive at the hotel later this afternoon.
Tuesday 07th: Today we make our way to picturesque Kielder Water and Forest Park where we take a break at the visitor centre before continuing to the charming market town of Hexham. This afternoon we return along the path of Hadrian’s Wall, which stretches 76 miles from the Tyne to the Solway.
Wednesday 08th: This morning we take our first train journey of the day. The line follows the beautiful Cumbrian coastline through Maryport and Whitehaven with stunning sea views until we reach Ravenglass. Here we join the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway – known as L’al Ratty steam train - running from the coast to the foothills of England’s highest mountains. Seven miles of steam through the Lake District National Park.
Thursday 09th: We travel into the Yorkshire Dales to Kirkby Lonsdale, where we find the weekly market in full swing. We pass the immense Ribblehead Viaduct, through charming Horton-in-Ribblesdale to Settle. This afternoon we embark on the most spectacular train journey in England – the famous Settle to Carlisle line. Towering viaducts, bridges, long deep tunnels and lovingly kept station gardens all help to make this one of the best-loved lines in the country. We travel along the entire line through majestic scenery back to our base of Carlisle.
Friday 10th: We leave our hotel after breakfast and head to Bowness on Windermere where we will take a break before continuing home, arriving later in the day.
