From Mozart to Mountains - Austria's Lakeside Wonders

From Mozart to Mountains - Austria's Lakeside Wonders
Embrace the glittering lakes, picture-postcard towns, and majestic mountains of Austria’s
beautiful Salzkammergut region. This scenic holiday invites you to discover tranquil
lakeside villages, charming spa towns, and historic cities, all set against a breathtaking
alpine backdrop. Highlights include visits to St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, and Mondsee, along
with two memorable lake cruises that showcase the crystal-clear waters for which this
region is famed. We also explore Salzburg, Mozart’s enchanting birthplace and the beloved
setting of The Sound of Music, as well as the elegant town of Bad Ischl with its grand
Kaiservilla.

Holiday Highlights

Our holiday begins with a journey to Dover for the Channel crossing to Calais, continuing to
our overnight hotel in Liège. The following day, we travel through Germany to Kronberg, where
we settle into the welcoming Ferienhotel Hofer, our base for five nights, complete with
sweeping views and comfortable surroundings. On Monday, we visit serene Attersee, nestled
beside its namesake lake. Here we enjoy a relaxing 50-minute cruise, gliding across
waters framed by rolling hills and alpine scenery. After free time to stroll, shop, or enjoy
lunch by the lakeside, we return to the hotel to enjoy the facilities and stunning views for a
leisurely afternoon and evening. Tuesday brings us to Mondsee, where we pause at the famous
church featured in The Sound of Music, before continuing to Mozart’s pretty village of St.
Gilgen. From here, a scenic cruise carries us to the charming lakeside town of St. Wolfgang,
where winding streets, waterside cafés, and traditional Austrian charm await.
Midweek, we spend the day in Salzburg, a city of music, history, and baroque beauty. Stroll the
cobbled streets of the Old Town, visit Mozart’s birthplace and childhood home, or wander
through the stunning Mirabell Gardens, immortalised on screen in the “Do-Re-Mi”
scene. For sweeping views, perhaps take the funicular up to the imposing Hohensalzburg
Fortress, a true highlight. On our final full day, we enjoy a guided tour of
the stately Kaiservilla, once the summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph and
Empress Elisabeth, followed by free time to stroll through its elegant Imperial Park. We then
continue to the spa town of Bad Ischl, famed for its thermal springs, elegant cafés, and
association with the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. We begin our return journey on Friday with an
overnight stop in Liège, before travelling onwards to our ferry crossing and homeward journey.
With sparkling lakes, alpine panoramas, and cultural treasures at every turn, this Austrian
adventure offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, history, and gentle relaxation.
