Monet, Calvados & the Charm of Normandy
Step into a world of timeless beauty, rich traditions, and artistic inspiration on this enchanting tour of Normandy. With its rolling green countryside, elegant seaside towns, and picturesque harbours, Normandy has long captured the imagination of artists, poets, and travellers alike. Staying in the heart of the historic city of Lisieux, we are perfectly placed to discover the many treasures this captivating region has to offer, from Monet’s dreamy gardens to the sparkling apple orchards that produce Normandy’s world-famous cider and Calvados.
Holiday Highlights
Our adventure begins with a short Channel crossing from Dover, before journeying into the heart of France to our welcoming, centrally located hotel, where we’ll enjoy four nights of comfort and French hospitality. We begin our holiday with a day at leisure in Rouen, the capital of Normandy and a city brimming with history and charm. Here, winding cobbled lanes lead to half-timbered houses, bustling squares, and the very marketplace where Joan of Arc was martyred. Towering above it all is the glorious Cathédrale Notre-Dame, captured again and again in Claude Monet’s celebrated paintings, its intricate façade glowing with ever-changing light. We also spend a glorious day exploring the “Côte Fleurie” - the Flower Coast. Our journey begins in Deauville, an elegant seaside resort, loved by writers, artists, and film stars. From its grand promenade to its chic boutiques and colourful parasols, Deauville exudes timeless glamour. From here we continue to Honfleur, a port town straight out of a painting, with a harbour framed by pastel-coloured houses and lively quayside cafés. It’s easy to see why so many impressionist painters set up their easels here. To complete the day, we visit a traditional Calvados distillery, where we discover the secrets of Normandy’s apple orchards and enjoy tastings of cider, Calvados, and regional cheeses. Another magical day takes us to Giverny, where the great impressionist, Claude Monet created the gardens that inspired some of his most iconic works. We stroll through the Clos Normand, a breathtaking flower garden bursting with colour and fragrance, before stepping into the serene, Japanese-style water garden, with its lily ponds and graceful green bridge, a scene immortalised in Monet’s famous waterlilies. As if that wasn’t enough, our day continues with a nostalgic journey aboard the Eure Valley Railway, where heritage carriages carry us through storybook countryside and picturesque villages, offering views unchanged for centuries. Finally, with hearts and minds full of Normandy’s beauty, we bid farewell to France, crossing the Channel and making our way home, taking with us not only memories of exquisite landscapes and historic towns, but also the flavours, fragrances, and artistic inspiration of this very special corner of the world.
